Why Network Drives Disappear After Windows Updates
Windows 11 updates frequently reset network profiles from “Private” to “Public”, which disables Network Discovery and SMB file sharing protocols for security. Here are the 3 fast solutions to restore your files:
Fix 1: Switch Network Profile to Private
- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- Click on your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
- Ensure the Network profile type is set to Private network (Public blocks shared drives).
- Scroll down to Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings and ensure Network discovery and File and printer sharing are turned ON.
Fix 2: Clear and Update Stored Windows Credentials
- Open Windows Search, type Credential Manager, and open it.
- Click Windows Credentials.
- Find the entry corresponding to your server or shared drive IP.
- Click Edit, re-enter your username and password, and save.
