What gets fixed over a remote connection — and what still needs hands on the machine
Roughly 85–90% of the tickets a small business raises in a year never require anyone to touch the hardware. Software conflicts, mail profile corruption, printer driver mismatches, mapped drives that stopped reconnecting, a laptop that takes four minutes to reach the desktop — all of that lives in the operating system, and an operating system can be reached from anywhere over an encrypted remote desktop session.
The exceptions are physical. A power supply that has failed, a cracked screen, a switch that needs a cable reseated, or a workstation that will not POST cannot be repaired through a screen-sharing tool, because there is no operating system left to connect to. Anything happening before Windows loads — BIOS or UEFI settings, boot order, firmware passwords, a failing SSD that will not initialise — sits below the layer a remote agent can see. How a support session actually works, step by step
Nothing happens on your computer without you starting it. The mechanics are deliberately simple, because the people using them are bookkeepers and dental office managers, not systems administrators.
- You reach out first. A call to +1 (202) 960-2022, an email, or a ticket. Nobody calls you out of the blue claiming your PC is infected.
- A join link or session code arrives. You click it, a small connector downloads, and you are shown the name of the technician requesting access.
- You approve the connection. Until you click accept, no screen data leaves your machine. On a Mac, macOS separately prompts for screen-recording and accessibility permission, which you also grant explicitly.
- You watch everything. The mouse moves, windows open, commands run — all visible on your own monitor. There is no hidden mode where the screen goes black and work continues out of sight.
- You can end it instantly. A disconnect button in the session toolbar, closing the connector, or simply pulling the Wi-Fi terminates access immediately.
- The session is logged. Start and end time, technician name, files transferred, and what was changed — retained so it can be audited later.
Attended versus unattended access
An attended session is the one described above: you are sitting there, you approve it, it ends when the ticket ends. An unattended connection relies on a small RMM agent (remote monitoring and management software) installed on managed machines, which allows patching, script execution and health checks outside working hours — typically at 2am, so nobody loses a workday to a reboot. Unattended access is what makes proactive maintenance possible: disk space alerts before the drive fills, failed backup jobs caught the morning they fail, security patches applied on a defined cycle rather than whenever a user finally clicks the reminder.
Both channels run over TLS 1.2 or 1.3 with AES-256 encryption end to end, and outbound only — meaning no port needs to be opened on your firewall, which is precisely how exposed RDP on port 3389 gets small businesses ransomed. Technician accounts sit behind multi-factor authentication and role-based permissions, so a junior technician handling a printer ticket does not hold domain-admin rights across your whole environment.

One rule covers almost every case: if a computer screen or a phone call gives you a number to call, do not call it. Look the provider up independently and use the number you already have on file. Real technicians will always wait while you verify who they are.
Frequently asked questions
Can a technician see my files or email when they are not in a session?
No. Attended sessions end when you disconnect, and the connector stops running. On managed machines the RMM agent reports health telemetry — disk space, patch status, antivirus state, service failures — not document contents or mailbox data. Any screen-level access still creates a logged session with a named technician attached.
Does remote support work if the computer will not boot into Windows?
Partly. If the machine reaches Safe Mode with Networking, a session can still be established and most boot-loop, driver and malware problems can be repaired from there. If it will not get that far — a black screen, a BIOS error, a drive not detected — someone must be at the keyboard. In those cases a technician talks you through the recovery steps on the phone.
How quickly can a session start?
