There are two completely different Bluetooth problems on Windows and mixing them up wastes an afternoon. In the first, the Bluetooth toggle has vanished from Settings entirely — Windows no longer believes the hardware exists. In the second, the toggle is right there and works, but a headset won’t pair, or it pairs and drops every few minutes.
Check which one you have: Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices on Windows 10, or Settings > Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11. If there’s no Bluetooth switch at all, jump to the missing-adapter section. If the switch is there, go to the pairing section.
Thirty seconds of things worth ruling out
- Airplane mode. Click the network icon in the taskbar. If airplane mode is on, Bluetooth is disabled and the toggle may be greyed out or hidden. Some laptops have a physical wireless switch or an Fn key combination (often Fn+F8 or Fn+F5) that toggles radios.
- The device’s own battery. A mouse or headset at 2% will connect and drop repeatedly. Charge it fully before troubleshooting the PC.
- It’s paired to something else. Most headsets connect to one host at a time. If it’s still bonded to a phone in someone’s pocket, it won’t connect to the laptop.
- Pairing mode actually engaged. Nearly every device needs a button held 5–10 seconds until the light flashes a specific pattern. Simply powering it on isn’t enough.
Then do a full shutdown, not a restart — and read the next section on why those aren’t the same thing.
Fast Startup is a common culprit
Windows Fast Startup doesn’t fully shut down — it hibernates the kernel session and restores it on power-on. That means hardware initialization is skipped, and a Bluetooth adapter that got into a bad state stays in that bad state through every “shutdown.” A Restart, oddly, does a cleaner job than a Shut Down.
To turn it off: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, click Change settings that are currently unavailable, then untick Turn on fast startup (recommended) and save.
You’ll lose a few seconds of boot time on an SSD-equipped machine. In exchange, a whole class of intermittent Bluetooth, WiFi, and USB weirdness goes away. On office fleets we disable it as a matter of course.
Problem one: the Bluetooth toggle is missing
Look in Device Manager
Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager. Look for a Bluetooth category near the top of the list.
If the category exists, expand it. You should see something like “Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)” or “Realtek Bluetooth Adapter” plus several generic entries. A yellow exclamation mark means a driver problem. Double-click it and read the Device status box on the General tab — Code 43 means Windows stopped the device, Code 10 means it can’t start, Code 45 means it’s not currently connected.
If there’s no Bluetooth category at all, go to View > Show hidden devices and look again, including under Other devices and Network adapters. An unrecognized adapter often sits in Other devices as “Unknown device” or “Base System Device.”
If the adapter is genuinely absent
Three possibilities. First, the machine may not have Bluetooth — plenty of desktops don’t, and business laptops from certain configurations shipped without it. Check the model specs on the manufacturer’s support site by serial number.
Second, it may be disabled in firmware. Reboot into BIOS/UEFI (F1 on ThinkPads, F2 on most Dells, F10 on HP) and look under Security, Configuration, or Onboard Device settings for a wireless or Bluetooth entry. On managed office machines, someone may have turned it off deliberately.
Third, the wireless card has failed or come loose. On most laptops Bluetooth lives on the same M.2 card as WiFi. If WiFi also stopped working at the same time, that’s a strong hint — a single failed card explains both.
Reinstall the driver
In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose Uninstall device. If you’re offered “Delete the driver software for this device,” tick it — that’s the whole point, you want the bad driver gone. Reboot. Windows reinstalls a generic driver on startup.
Then install the manufacturer’s driver rather than relying on the generic one. Intel publishes its own Bluetooth package; Lenovo, Dell, and HP each host model-specific drivers on their support sites. Vendor drivers reliably behave better than Windows’ fallback, particularly for audio devices.
When to roll back instead
If Bluetooth was fine and broke right after an update, the newer driver is the suspect. Right-click the adapter, Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. If that button is greyed out, no previous version is stored — uninstall and manually install an older release from the vendor.
Cross-check the timing with Settings > Update & Security > View update history. If a driver or cumulative update landed the same day the problem started, you have your answer.
The Bluetooth Support Service
This one is quietly responsible for a lot of missing toggles. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, press Enter. Scroll to Bluetooth Support Service.
Double-click it. Set Startup type to Automatic (the Windows default is Manual, which sometimes fails to trigger). If Service status shows Stopped, click Start. Click Apply, then OK.
While you’re there, check the Recovery tab and set “First failure” and “Second failure” to Restart the Service. That way a crash self-heals rather than leaving Bluetooth dead until the next reboot.
Two related services worth confirming are running: Bluetooth Audio Gateway Service and, on Windows 11, Bluetooth User Support Service. Leave those on their defaults unless the audio side specifically misbehaves.
Problem two: it won’t pair or keeps dropping
Remove the device and start clean
A corrupted pairing record is extremely common, especially with devices that get used across a laptop, a phone, and a conference room system. Go to Bluetooth settings, click the problem device, choose Remove device, and confirm.
Then clear the pairing on the accessory too — most headsets have a factory reset, typically holding power and volume-down for 10–15 seconds. Otherwise you rebuild a bond on one side while the other still holds stale keys.
Reboot the PC, put the device in pairing mode, and add it fresh via Add device > Bluetooth.
Stop Windows powering the adapter down
This is the fix for “my mouse disconnects when I stop moving it” and “the headset drops after five minutes of silence.”
In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the adapter, choose Properties, open the Power Management tab, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK.
Do the same for every USB Root Hub and Generic USB Hub under Universal Serial Bus controllers if you’re using a USB Bluetooth dongle. Windows suspends those hubs aggressively.
Then go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings and set USB settings > USB selective suspend setting to Disabled. On a laptop, set it for both battery and plugged-in if disconnects happen unplugged.
Interference from your own WiFi
Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz band — the same crowded space as 2.4 GHz WiFi, wireless keyboards, microwaves, and USB 3.0 devices, which emit broadband noise right in that range.
Practical steps: move the USB dongle to a front port or a short extension cable instead of a port sandwiched between two USB 3.0 drives. Move an external SSD away from the receiver. Switch the laptop’s WiFi to 5 GHz where possible. Keep the accessory within about 10 feet with clear line of sight while testing.
In an office with a dozen wireless headsets, interference stops being theoretical. If everyone’s audio degrades at once during busy periods, that’s the environment, not the individual laptops.

The Hands-Free versus Stereo trap
A headset that connects fine but sounds like a drive-through speaker isn’t broken. Windows exposes two profiles: a high-quality stereo output (A2DP) with no microphone, and a low-bandwidth hands-free profile that enables the mic but crushes audio quality. It can only use one at a time.
Open Settings > System > Sound. You’ll see the headset listed twice — once as “Headphones” and once as “Headset (Hands-Free).” For music and video, select the stereo one. For calls, apps like Teams and Zoom switch to hands-free automatically when they grab the microphone.
If audio stays terrible after a call ends, the app kept the mic open. Close it fully or reselect the stereo output.
The built-in troubleshooter
It’s not useless, it’s just limited. On Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Bluetooth. On Windows 11: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Bluetooth.
It reliably catches stopped services and disabled radios and reliably misses driver and hardware faults. Run it, but treat a clean result as “no obvious software issue,” not “the hardware is fine.”
A note on Windows 10: mainstream support ended in October 2025. Driver updates for older wireless chipsets have largely stopped, and some Bluetooth issues on Windows 10 now have no vendor fix coming. If a machine is stuck on it, a $15 USB Bluetooth 5.x dongle with a current driver is often faster and cheaper than chasing a legacy adapter — but for a business, running an unsupported operating system is a security problem of its own, not just a compatibility one.
If nothing has worked
Two things left to try before declaring the hardware dead.
Test the accessory with a phone. If the headset pairs instantly with an iPhone, the accessory is fine and the PC is the problem. If it fails there too, stop troubleshooting Windows.
Then create a new local Windows user account and sign in. A surprising number of Bluetooth pairing failures are per-user profile corruption. If it pairs immediately in the fresh profile, the fault is in the original profile’s registry state, not the hardware.
Beyond that: replace the wireless card, or add a USB dongle and disable the internal adapter in Device Manager so the two don’t conflict.
Common questions
Why did my Bluetooth toggle disappear from Windows 10?
Windows hides the switch when it can’t see a working adapter. The usual reasons are a driver that failed after an update, the Bluetooth Support Service not running, airplane mode, or the adapter being disabled in BIOS. Check Device Manager first — if the adapter appears there with an error code, it’s a driver issue; if it’s absent even with hidden devices shown, it’s firmware or hardware.
My Bluetooth mouse keeps disconnecting. How do I stop it?
Almost always power management. In Device Manager, open the Bluetooth adapter’s Properties, go to Power Management, and untick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Also set USB selective suspend to Disabled in advanced power settings. If it persists, check the mouse battery and move any USB 3.0 devices away from the receiver.
Should I use Windows’ driver or the manufacturer’s?
The manufacturer’s, in nearly every case. Windows ships a generic driver that gets the adapter working but often handles audio profiles, power states, and newer Bluetooth features poorly. Get the package from Intel, Realtek, or your laptop maker’s support page using the exact model or serial number. Windows Update sometimes overwrites it later, which is worth knowing if a problem suddenly returns.
Can WiFi interfere with Bluetooth?
Yes. Both share the 2.4 GHz band, and so do microwaves, cordless phones, and the electromagnetic noise from USB 3.0 ports and cables. Modern Bluetooth handles this with frequency hopping, but heavy congestion still causes stuttering audio and dropped connections.
