A Dell laptop that won’t turn on usually tells you why. The adapter has a light, the power or battery light blinks diagnostic codes, and Dell builds a power reset, board and screen self-tests and BIOS recovery into the laptop. Work through them in order to tell a bad charger from a stuck power state, corrupted firmware or a failed part.

This page is Dell-specific. For ThinkPads and general power checks, see our laptop won’t turn on guide; for HP, see HP laptop won’t turn on. GoPro IT is an independent support company, not affiliated with Dell; the steps follow Dell’s published support articles, listed under Sources.

Try these first

  1. Plug the Dell adapter into a wall outlet and check that its light comes on.
  2. Died on a dock with a flat battery? Charge it with its own adapter for 30 minutes first.
  3. If the power or battery light blinks amber and white, count both colors and write the pattern down.
  4. No lights at all? Run Dell’s RTC reset: adapter connected, hold the power button 30 to 35 seconds until the power light blinks three times (BIOS settings return to defaults).
  5. Hold D and press the power button to check whether the screen itself works.

Check power the Dell way

For general no-power checks, see the guide linked above; on a Dell, add these:

  • Adapter light. Dell adapters have a light on the brick or cable. If it’s off, reseat both ends; if it stays off, replace the adapter. Stop using any adapter, cable or power port that is frayed, scorched or damaged.
  • Wattage. Use a Dell adapter of the correct wattage. A smaller USB-C charger may not start a laptop with a flat battery; our laptop charging guide explains the wattage rules.
  • Removable battery. On older Latitude and Inspiron models that have one, do Dell’s hard reset: unplug the adapter, take out the battery, disconnect everything else and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds. Then connect only the adapter and power on; if it starts, the battery is the problem.
  • Built-in battery. Use the RTC reset below. On models without it, press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds with the adapter unplugged.

Run Dell’s RTC reset

Dell’s real-time clock (RTC) reset discharges residual power, which can revive a laptop that ignores the power button. Dell lists it for select Alienware, Inspiron, Latitude, Precision, Vostro and XPS laptops.

  1. Disconnect all external devices.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 to 35 seconds, until the power light blinks three times.
  4. Release the button, then try to power on.

Dell says holding for under 25 seconds or over 40, or unplugging the adapter, cancels the reset, so count carefully. The laptop may restart several times before the Dell logo appears.

After the reset

Your files and BIOS passwords are untouched, but Dell says the reset restores BIOS defaults and clears the date and time; the boot list and Secure Boot may reset too. Not booting straight away doesn’t mean it failed.

  • “No bootable device,” a BitLocker screen, or Windows won’t load: press F2 at the Dell logo, set the date and time, and put the storage mode back to RAID On or AHCI, whichever it was. The wrong mode usually stops Windows with an inaccessible boot device error, and changed settings can trigger a BitLocker prompt, so have the key ready.
  • Power light never blinks three times: the model may not support the reset, or a BIOS admin password is set; Dell says that since June 2025 an admin password may disable the manual reset.
  • Latitudes without a coin-cell battery (such as the 5320, 7420 and 7520) run this reset themselves after the battery drains flat, restarting several times. If offered BIOS restore options, pick Last Known Good; Dell warns the defaults won’t boot if storage was changed to AHCI.

Read the Dell power and battery light codes

When a Dell can’t finish startup, the power or battery light often blinks a code: amber blinks, a pause, then white blinks, repeating. Count three full cycles before writing it down.

The table follows Dell’s BIOS recovery, screen test and Inspiron indicator guides; meanings can differ by model, so confirm yours in the manual.

Pattern (amber, white)Dell’s meaningWhat to do
2, 1Processor failureRepair
2, 3No memory detectedReseat removable memory, unplugged; soldered memory means a repair
2, 4 or 2, 5Memory failure, or invalid memory installedReseat removable memory or undo a recent upgrade
2, 7 or 2, 8Screen or screen power rail failure (older codes)LCD self-test; usually a screen, cable or board repair
3, 1CMOS (clock) battery failureCoin-cell battery or board service
3, 3BIOS recovery image not foundRun BIOS recovery from a USB drive
3, 4Recovery image found but invalidRun BIOS recovery from a USB drive
3, 5Power rail failureRepair; BIOS recovery won’t fix it
3, 6BIOS corruptionRun BIOS recovery
3, 7BIOS or processor failure (a Management Engine error in Dell’s Inspiron guide)Try BIOS recovery; if the code returns, it’s a repair
4, then 3 to 6Display faults on newer models (replacing 2, 7 and 2, 8)LCD self-test; plan a screen or cable repair

Look up other patterns in your model’s manual, found by service tag. Three patterns aren’t startup codes. On Dell’s 2020 to 2025 Inspirons, a battery light flashing only amber means the battery has dropped below its low-battery level, so leave it on the adapter; a power light flashing only white means standby, so briefly press the power button; and a battery light simply alternating amber and white means an unsupported non-Dell adapter or battery is attached, so try a Dell adapter.

Motherboard self-test (M-BIST)

On supported models, with the laptop off, press and hold M and the power button together. If the battery light stays off, no system board fault was found. If it flashes an amber code for about 30 seconds, Dell says the board has a problem: note the code and arrange a repair.

Lights on, black screen: test the screen first

If it powers on but the screen stays black, first rule out Windows running behind a dark screen:

  1. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, which restarts the graphics driver; a beep or flicker means Windows is responding.
  2. Press Windows + P, then P and Enter, to cycle display modes in case the picture is going to a monitor that’s no longer attached. Dell also suggests Fn + F8.

LCD built-in self-test

With the laptop off and the adapter connected, hold D and press the power button, keeping D held until solid colors appear. A working screen cycles through black, white, red, green and blue; Esc stops it. Dell says the basic test works on all its laptops.

  • Colors appear cleanly: the screen is fine and the laptop is failing to start or send video. Go to M-BIST and BIOS recovery.
  • Colors show lines, dark patches or flicker: the screen or its cable has failed.
  • Nothing appears: connect an external monitor to the HDMI or a video-capable USB-C port and restart. If the Dell logo appears there, the internal screen or its cable is at fault.

Dell BIOS recovery with Ctrl + Esc

Most Dell laptops made since December 2015 (Intel 6th generation and newer) can rebuild a corrupted BIOS from a copy on the drive or a USB stick. Use it for the 3, 3, 3, 4, 3, 6 and 3, 7 codes, or a black screen after a failed BIOS update; 3, 5 is a power-rail failure that needs a repair instead.

Before you start

  • Have the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key ready if the drive is encrypted; you may be asked for it afterwards. Our BitLocker recovery key guide shows where it’s kept.
  • Remove other USB drives, and charge the battery to at least 25% if it will take a charge.
  • Keep the adapter connected and don’t turn the laptop off; it restarts several times.

Steps

  1. Unplug the adapter from the laptop.
  2. Press and hold Ctrl + Esc on the built-in keyboard.
  3. Still holding them, plug the adapter back in. On Alienware laptops, Dell adds one step: press the power button once after plugging in.
  4. Release the keys when the BIOS recovery screen appears, and choose Recover BIOS (the label varies by model).
  5. If a Reset NVRAM option is shown, Dell suggests trying with it disabled first, then enabled if recovery fails.

If it reports no recovery image

Drive recovery needs the original factory drive, no Windows reinstall or reformat, UEFI boot mode, and no BitLocker encryption or BIOS drive password. Otherwise, use USB. On another computer, download your exact model’s BIOS update from Dell’s Drivers & Downloads page and rename it to BIOS_IMG.rcv, replacing .exe. Turn on File name extensions in File Explorer’s View menu first, or it ends up as BIOS_IMG.rcv.exe. Copy it to the root of a FAT32-formatted USB drive of 2GB to 32GB; Windows’ Format dialog doesn’t offer FAT32 on larger drives. Plug it in and repeat the steps; the laptop checks USB first.

Afterwards, BIOS settings usually return to defaults. Press F2 and recheck the boot sequence, Secure Boot and storage mode (AHCI or RAID On, whichever Windows was installed with) before Windows starts. Then install your model’s latest BIOS update from Windows to restore the drive’s recovery copy, on adapter power and without interrupting it. On a BitLocker drive, Dell advises suspending protection first and resuming it afterwards, or the next restart can demand the recovery key.

If it starts: Dell pre-boot diagnostics

If you can reach the Dell logo, tap F12 until the One Time Boot Menu appears and choose Diagnostics. The quick test runs automatically. To test one part, press Esc and open Advanced test.

A failed test gives an error code in the 2000-0000 format plus a validation code; enter both with the service tag on Dell’s pre-boot analysis page for the cause and repair options. Dell’s battery codes include 2000-0131 (the battery is not installed), 2000-0132 (the battery is reaching the end of its usable life) and 2000-0133 (the battery cannot supply sufficient power); the last two point at the battery, not the charger.

If diagnostics pass but you still get “No bootable device” or Windows recovery screens, power isn’t the problem. Check in F2 setup that the drive is listed and the storage mode hasn’t changed, then follow the automatic repair loop steps, which protect your data first.

For offices running Dell laptops

  • Record each laptop’s service tag (on the label underneath and in BIOS setup); Dell’s warranty check, manuals and BIOS files all start from it.
  • Store BIOS admin passwords with your admin credentials; one can block the manual RTC reset.
  • Push BIOS updates with Dell Command | Update on AC power; Dell says its update tools suspend BitLocker automatically. Confirm each recovery key is saved to Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory first.

If nobody in the office has time for this, our Business Support Plan covers this kind of remote help desk work with unlimited tickets; hardware repairs, parts and on-site work aren’t included.

When it’s a repair, and protecting the data

  • No lights at all with a known-good Dell adapter, after a correct RTC reset.
  • M-BIST lights amber, or the same blink code returns after BIOS recovery.
  • A swollen battery (a lifting touchpad or bulging base): unplug the laptop, don’t start or charge it, and don’t press, puncture or pry out the battery. Keep it on a hard surface away from anything flammable; if it’s hot, smoking or hissing, keep clear and call 911.
  • Liquid damage or a burning smell: unplug it and stop.
  • Diagnostics fail on memory, storage or the system board.

Check warranty status with the service tag first, and note the blink pattern or diagnostics codes and what you’ve tried. A worn-out battery is often an orderable part under Parts & Repairs on Dell’s support site.

If the laptop holds the only copy of important files, say so before any repair; the drive can usually be read in another computer, with the BitLocker key if it is encrypted. This is hands-on work for Dell or a local repair shop, not a remote session. Once it runs again, tell us what’s left, such as a BitLocker prompt or missing drivers, and we’ll say honestly whether it suits a remote support session, which you approve and can end at any time.

Common questions

Why is my Dell laptop power light blinking amber and white?

Usually it’s a diagnostic code. Count the amber blinks, then the white blinks, across a few cycles. Dell documents 3 amber and 6 white as BIOS corruption, and 3, 3 or 3, 4 as a missing or invalid BIOS recovery image, all handled with BIOS recovery. If the battery light simply alternates amber and white, Dell says an unsupported non-Dell adapter or battery is attached. Other patterns vary by model; check your manual by service tag.

My Dell won’t turn on but the charging light is on. What now?

Power is reaching the laptop, so the adapter is probably fine. Disconnect everything, then do Dell’s RTC reset: with the adapter connected, hold the power button 30 to 35 seconds until the power light blinks three times. If it still won’t start, run the LCD self-test with the D key and M-BIST with the M key to separate screen, board and startup faults.

How do I hard reset a Dell laptop?

It depends on the battery. With a removable battery, unplug the adapter, take the battery out and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds, then reconnect and start it. With a built-in battery, Dell’s equivalent on select models is the RTC reset described above. Neither touches your files, but the RTC reset returns BIOS settings to defaults, so you may need to set the date, time and storage mode in F2 setup before Windows starts.

What does Ctrl + Esc do on a Dell laptop?

It starts BIOS recovery. With the adapter unplugged, hold Ctrl + Esc and plug the adapter back in, then release when the recovery screen appears. The laptop rebuilds its BIOS from a copy on the drive, or from a USB stick holding a file named BIOS_IMG.rcv for that exact model. It works on most Dells made since late 2015.

Will Dell BIOS recovery erase my files?

No. BIOS recovery rewrites the laptop’s firmware, not the drive. Your BIOS settings usually return to defaults, so you may need to fix the boot order and storage mode, and an encrypted drive will probably ask for its BitLocker recovery key on the next start. Have that key ready before you begin, and don’t interrupt power while recovery runs.

Is it the battery or the motherboard?

If the battery is removable, take it out and try the adapter alone; starting that way points to the battery. On sealed models, run M-BIST by holding M and the power button: an amber battery light means a system board fault. If the laptop starts, Dell’s F12 diagnostics test the battery: 2000-0132 means it is reaching the end of its usable life, and 2000-0133 that it cannot supply sufficient power.

Why does my Dell turn on for a second, then shut off?

It usually means the laptop can’t get or hold enough power to finish starting. Common causes are an adapter without enough wattage, often a low-power USB-C charger, a worn-out battery, a faulty dock or USB device, or liquid damage. Disconnect everything, use a Dell adapter of the right wattage, and take out the battery if it’s removable. If it still cuts out and no amber and white code points to a fix above, it needs a repair.
