If QuickBooks displays Error H202 when attempting to switch to Multi-User Mode, it means the workstation computer cannot reach the server hosting your company file. The file is intact and your data is safe – the failure is simply a network handshake or firewall block between your computers.

Why QuickBooks Shows Error Code H202
Error H202 occurs when the workstation sends an IP request to the host machine running QuickBooks Database Server Manager, but the connection times out. The four primary culprits are:
- QuickBooksDBXX Service Stopped: The database service on the host computer crashed or did not start automatically.
- Windows Defender Firewall Blocking Ports: Windows Firewall is blocking inbound communication on dynamic ports (8019, 55378-55382).
- DNS Name Resolution Failure: The workstation cannot ping the host server by computer name.
- Corrupt .ND (Network Data) File: The configuration file next to your company file contains outdated IP routing.
Fix 1: Restart QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the Host
Always perform this step on the host server or main computer where the `.qbw` company file physically resides:
- Press Windows Key + R, type
services.msc, and hit Enter. - Scroll down to find QuickBooksDB33 (for QB 2023), QuickBooksDB34 (for QB 2024), etc.
- Right-click the service and click Restart. Ensure its Startup Type is set to Automatic.
- Repeat the same process for the QBCFMonitorService.
Fix 2: Rename the .ND and .TLG Configuration Files
If the network data file has cached a stale IP address, forcing QuickBooks to regenerate it solves Error H202 instantly:
- Navigate to the folder containing your company file (e.g.,
CompanyFile.qbw). - Look for matching files named
CompanyFile.qbw.NDandCompanyFile.qbw.TLG. - Right-click each and rename them to
CompanyFile.qbw.ND.oldandCompanyFile.qbw.TLG.old. - Open QuickBooks Database Server Manager from the Windows Start menu, click Scan Folders, and browse to your company file folder. Click Start Scan.
Fix 3: Verify DNS Host Name Ping Between Workstation and Server
From the workstation experiencing Error H202:
- Open Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and type
ping [ServerComputerName]. - If you receive request timeouts or “could not find host”, you have a local DNS routing problem.
- Opening your
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchostsfile and adding the server’s static IP and hostname will immediately restore QuickBooks multi-user connectivity.
